The drawback to downhill skiing is that it takes more time and is much harder to learn than cross country skiing, meaning you need more structured lessons which is more expensive.

Also, the equipment is a bit more expensive than cross country skiing gear, and you need a lot more of it too. Your clothing will need to be heavier because at the speeds downhill skiers achieve the effect of the wind can be bone chilling. Extra protection is a must.

Finally, finding places to go for downhill skiing is a harder. You'll have to book at a ski resort to enjoy this sport and that means facing lodging fees in addition to your lift tickets and other expenses.
