Extend the Season with Glacier Skiing Adventures

Glacier skiing is aimed towards both cross country skiers and downhill skiers. Since it is most often done during the summer, the activity extends the season making Glacier
National Park lodging and other activities in Glacier National Park as well as those at other resorts featuring glaciers, highly popular off-season spots for dedicated skiing enthusiasts.

Glacier Skiing Within the United States

There are sites throughout Europe and North America that offer glacier skiing.

Whistler/Blackcomb

In North America, the Whistler Blackcomb resort offers downhill glacier skiing. The slopes are designed for intermediate to advanced ability skiers and there are either groomed slopes, moguls or even a terrain park from which to choose. In order to access the slopes, skiers have to take two chair lifts from the Whistler Blackcomb's base and then a further bus is needed to reach the glacier terrain, which is open from early June to late July. Usually there is a depth of around one meter of snow, but with improved grooming of the slopes and cooler than normal temperatures two meters is possible.

The Whistler Blackcomb resort offers a Summer Glacier Camp where every glacier skier can stay during their vacation. There is also a new addition of a public half pipe which glacier skiers can now use.

Cross Country Skiing at the Glacier National Park, Montana

If you are looking for Glacier skiing in Montana, the Glacier National Park is definitely the place for you. It is designed for cross country skiers who know exactly how to handle the backcountry. Only intermediate and advanced level skiers should attempt this resort as there are potential risks of avalanche and hypothermia.

There are plenty of Glacier National Park lodgings available to choose from during your stay; however most are closed during the winter. There are three main places within the park where you can ski during the spring Many Glacier, Granite Park and Logan Pass.

The wildlife is also a main attraction for skiers and if this is something that appeals to you, the best route you can take for cross country skiing is probably Autumn Creek. There is also a route for beginners called McDonald Creek.

Throughout your stay you can also try out some of the other activities in Glacier National Park, including fishing, caving, hiking and mountaineering. Cross-country skiing is mainly open from December to April though it is always best to check the availability and the opening times before planning your trip.
