Ideal Information on Glacier Skiing in Europe

There are more options available on glacier skiing for skiers in Europe than in North America. Some glaciers are only open during the winter, but there are various different
resorts that do stay open all year round. There are also places which are designed to suit all abilities, so you should find something that is ideal for you. The European countries which have glaciers are Austria, France, Italy and Switzerland.

Austria

The best place for glacier skiing in Austria is Kitzsteinhorn. There are sun terraces and umbrella bars where the skiers can let their hair down and the cable cars and lifts are open year round. There are training programs available if you would like to learn more about skiing as well as a 3km long cross-country track. Overall the scenery is amazing and you won't regret your decision to ski Austria.

France

French skiing is best done at Tignes, which has more than 20 kilometers of runs and a vertical drop of more than 750 meters. The glacier is open from mid-June to late September and the snowpark is the place where most skiers hang out.

The snowpark offers two half pipes, various sized bumps, jumps and rails. Other activities include basketball, table tennis, a water slide and volleyball. On the actual lake you have the option to hire a sailing boat, a rowing boat or you can even windsurf.

Italy

The best place to ski Italy is Val Senales. In summer, skiers have access to 8km of prepared ski runs with gentle, easy slopes for beginners and demanding downhill slopes for those who are more advanced. The conditions make it excellent for carving, Telemark skiing, snowboarding and cross country skiing. Other activities include horse riding and climbing.

Switzerland

Swiss skiing is best done in Zermatt where the highest and largest summer skiing area can be found. There are twenty-five kilometers of pistes and eight ski lifts which are open all summer. (It is essential that summer skiers wear sunglasses as the sun can be really fierce in Zermatt.)

There are often international ski teams in Zermatt and it isn't strange to be skiing around some top Olympic teams. The Glacier Grotto in Klein Matterhorn is definitely worth a look, with underground tunnels, blue glacial ice and ice sculptures. Overall Zermatt is great for scenery and to test your skiing abilities to the limit.

So, whether you love the activities in Glacier National Park and you want to stay at the Glacier National Park lodgings, or if you prefer the Swiss slopes, you can enjoy glacier skiing all year round.
