Injuries that could occur during Alpine Skiing

As Alpine skiing is so popular, the chance of having accidents is quite high and so you should always make sure you have the right safety equipment. Beginners especially are most at risk of having accidents, as they haven't got as much balance or skill as more advanced skiers. Of all the skiing accidents, most tend to happen either late in the morning or late in the afternoon and they generally involve injuries to the knees (between 20-30%). However, another common body part which tends to get hurt quite frequently is the thumb. Other injuries that can occur include:
  • Fractures
  • Bruising
  • Sprains
  • Lacerations
Overall, injuries can, and do happen. However, there are things that you can do to protect yourself. You just have to take the time to research safety precautions.

Preventative Measures You Can Take to Reduce the Chance of Injury.

Whilst it is true that accidents can, and do happen, most can be reduced. Some ways of reducing skiing accidents include:
Being Fully Prepared
Before you actually go on your skiing trip, you should be fully fit and prepared. By training beforehand, you are more likely to be able to hold your balance, hence limiting the chance of having an accident.
Always Warm Up
It is important before any exercise to do a proper warm up first. This is especially true with such physical exercises such as skiing. A warm up helps to prepare the body for what is to come, and it stops injuries such as sprains and muscle cramp. It is also possible that muscles can tear if they aren't warmed up properly so that is another reason why you should take the time to do it.
Don't Try and Do Too Much
Many skiers overestimate their ability and they try and attempt slopes that are way out of their league. This is one of the main reasons that accidents occur and you should never be more concerned over your ego than your own safety.

There are usually plenty of slopes for all abilities at all skiing resorts, so you should be able to find something to suit you.
Always Take Note of the Snow Reports
The weather can have a dramatic effect on the slopes which can make conditions dangerous. It is always worth taking note of the days expected conditions before setting off on your skiing trip, and be prepared for any changes. Skiing in pairs is always the safest idea as if the weather does take a turn for the worse; at least you will have a better chance of getting the help that you need.

Overall, there are lots of precautions you should take and it is vital that you know the safety precautions which you may need in case of an emergency.
